"Imagine"- #3

Released- 1971

This song is ultimately about peace and worldwide unity. This is an extended feeling from the Hippie movement in the 1960's and probably somewhat motivated by Lennon’s activist girlfriend Yoko Ono. Lennon takes this opportunity to discuss the three main reasons he sees that causes conflict- religion, politics, and possessions. He does this by imagining a world without these barriers. Without religion he feels that people would not be living for the afterlife but would instead people would be “living for today.” Without politics and political borders he feels that there would be nothing for people to “kill or die for.” Finally without possessions there would be a better sharing of wealth and of the world which would result in a stronger “brotherhood.”
