"Smells Like Teen Spirit"- #9
Released-1991

Nirvana, a band notorious for teenage expressionism and anarchy, wrote its most iconic song after the band’s singer Kirk Cobain was told he “smells like teen spirit” which was a type of deodorant; however, this line is not seen anywhere in the line. Cobain interpreted this line as a symbol of teenage rebellion. A desire for a lack of clear structure or plans is seen throughout this song. This song repeats meaningless words in its chorus “A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido” and jumbled verses to create a sense of confusion. He further emphasizes his lack of clear direction when he says that he feels stupid and he is “worse at what [he does] best.” However, the message of rebellion comes out strong throughout the song. The first line of the song calls for the listener to “load up on guns, and bring your friends.” They continue to proclaim their lack of innocence by stating that “they know a dirty word” and demanding entertainment in mocking tones.
